I’ve seen them too.
I was there when the crippled battle wagons limped back to Earth.
One of them carried Perriwinkle.
She was a fleet navigator, and she came back in pieces.
I put her back together again, as best I could.
But I lost track of her after that. Until recently.
She had found work dancing at ReaktOr and wanted to see me.
She knew she would never navigate the stars again,
but she still had a contribution to make.
We had signed up together in the early days at Tyrell Corp.
I went into Medical, she took Astrogation.
It was sweet to watch her dance again, as she used to in our off-duty hours.
Damn this war.

“He’s too pretty to be dangerous,” that’s what she’d told Magdalena.
“Honey, you got it all wrong,” Maggie’d replied. “Any boy that pretty’s either gay, or EXTRA dangerous, girl!”
They’d both laughed then, and Andi’d made her way across the bar.
“My name’s Andi,” she said, nerves disarming her usual sharp tongue as she’d gotten closer. It wasn’t just his looks- he was hot, but so were lots of guys. It was just… him. The way he’d watched her from across the bar earlier, like a wolf idly considering a lamb it’d marked as prety, debating which first strike would be the most exquisite. The way his lips brushed the ice in his drink as he savored a slow sip before even acknowledging her introduction.
“Mmhmm.” The way his voice cut through the din to deliver a noncommital response to her that was half purr, half growl.
“It’s short for Andalucia,” she added, groaning inwardly at how vapid she must sound.
“Jude,” he offered back, still studying his drink as he swirled it around the cut crystal rocks glass.
“Short for Judas?” she asked, laughing, finally reclaiming a touch of her usual snark.
He made eye contact then, the almost luminous lavender-blue of his eyes reminding her of childhood stories of how a cobra’s stare would hypnotize its prey, and his sensual smirk reminding her of far more adult fancies.
“Sometimes,” he said, his voice velvet and shadow.
“Sometimes.” He punctuated his repetition by reaching out and tracing her lower lip with the tip of his right index finger, playful smirk becoming cruel smile as she trembled involuntarily.
She knew then that she was his, for tonight at the very least.
“Are you going to hurt me?” she heard herself ask without even realizing she’d spoken, and his faint laugh slid shivers down her spine.
“Why?” he asked.
“Would you like me to?”
